Girona Airport Information

Airport Location

Girona Airport (also referred to as Gerona Airport) serves the Costa Brava resort area of Catalonia, but is also less than 100km from Barcelona, so many visitors to Barcelona fly to Girona. Girona Airport is a major operating base for Ryanair, although Ryanair are currently in dispute with the Spanish authorities over operating charges at the airport, and plan to reduce the number of flights. However due to its proximity to Barcelona there are usually plenty of affordable flights available (especially away from the peak summer season).

Located about 12kms to the south of Girona City centre, the airport offers fast access to the Costa Brava resorts. The airport has excellent road connections to all the major resorts. In addition, the airport is only forty minutes from the French border offering easy access to the ski resorts of Andorra and the Pyrenees. Barcelona is just over an hours drive to the south, and this has made Girona a popular alternative to Barcelona airport which is located the south of Barcelona.

Arrival/Departure Information

The arrivals area at Girona Airport is on the ground floor next to the baggage reclaim hall. The best place to meet a friend or family member is in the food gallery, or at the meeting point that is located in the hallway between the departures and arrivals gates. The baggage reclaim area is next to the main arrivals hall.

For airport departures, the ticket check-in counters and luggage areas are located on the ground floor although boarding is conducted on the first floor of the terminal. After passing the security checkpoint on the first floor you will find a small shopping mall area and a food gallery near the back of the departures hall in the public area.

Taxi

Just outside of the arrivals area is the taxi rank which makes finding a taxi an easy task. Most taxis can carry up to four people otherwise for larger groups a private transfer may be a better idea. The airport is about 15km away from the Girona city centre which makes the fares reasonably cheap although they all run on a metre so depending on where you want to travel will be the price of the ride. On average you should expect to pay about.59 euro per kilometre and extra for excess luggage or waiting. There are also extra charges for waiting if you need your taxi to stop at any location prior to your end destination. In addition, night and weekend fares are higher with a flat fee added to every trip.

Car Hire

The Costa Brava is an easy area for driving. If you are thinking about visiting the inland villages and scenic coastline, then hiring a car at Girona Airport is a good option. The car hire desks are located to the right of the arrivals area and in the connecting hall that joins the departures and arrival gates.

Once completing the paperwork you will need to exit the terminal and head to the right towards the bus stops walking past them to the left and into the car park where you can pick up your vehicle. When it comes to returning a vehicle simply drop it off at the front of the Terminal building in the PO and P1 car hire parks. A tip to the wise, if you are planning on touring the area in your car you will need to have visibility vests in the car which are required by law and must be in the car at all times. Therefore, make sure you ask for these when picking up your vehicle at the airport.

Guide to Airport Shops and Food Outlets

As Girona Airport is not a particularly large airport, it only has a few shops including a duty free shop located in the passenger terminal where you can find fine foods, spirits, cigarettes, and perfumes. There are also two more duty free shops in the public area that offer local produce. There are also five different areas where you can find food and drinks while travelling. The only catering area of the airport is located in the public area near the check-in lobby and is aptly titled the GFood Gallery cafeteria. It is also the only place that is open 24 hours daily. In the passenger only areas you can also find several fast food joints and restaurants. There is an outside area where you can take food to enjoy the last rays of Spanish sun before you catch your flight.

Airport Prices at the Shops

The prices at the shops are reasonably low due to the fact that three of the five are duty free shops, however, the selection of items is small therefore you are best off shopping in the resort malls or boutiques. Generally prices will be cheaper outside the terminal, so you are recommended to buy cigarettes, alcohol, olive oil and other products before you arrive at the airport.
